NRMC Foundation Provides Free Cancer Screenings

More than 40 firefighters from across the region received free cancer screenings thanks to an initiative led by the Natchitoches Regional Medical Center (NRMC) Foundation. The event, held at the NRMC Multispecialty Clinic, was part of an ongoing effort to support firefighters, who face increased cancer risks due to exposure to harmful chemicals in the line of duty.
Under Louisiana’s Act 554, local governments are required to provide no-cost cancer screenings for full-time and retired firefighters. However, with many departments already working within tight budgets, the NRMC Foundation stepped in to ensure the financial burden of these comprehensive screenings did not fall on local agencies.
Dr. Keith Ashby led the medical team conducting the screenings, while a representative from Galleri, a company specializing in early cancer detection, was also on-site to provide support and resources. The Galleri test analyzes
methylation patterns of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) to detect a unique “fingerprint” of cancer. If a cancer signal is found, the test predicts the most likely origin, helping to guide further diagnostic workups. This advanced screening tool enhances early detection efforts, which is especially critical for firefighters, who are at higher risk for occupational cancers.

“This initiative is about taking care of the people who take care of us,” said Halie Errington, NRMC Foundation Development Director. “Firefighters are regularly exposed to dangerous, cancer-causing chemicals, and early detection is key. We are proud to step up and support them in any way we can.”
The success of the event was made possible by a coordinated effort from an NRMC team of over 20 members, ensuring a seamless and efficient process for all participants. Firefighters from both city and parish departments took part, and plans are already underway to extend the initiative to include firefighters from Winn Parish and Sabine Parish in the near future.

About the Galleri Test
The Galleri test does not detect a signal for all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. False positive and false negative results do occur. The Galleri test identifies DNA in the bloodstream shed by cancer cells and does not predict future genetic risk for cancer. The Galleri test should be used in addition to healthcare provider recommended screening tests. Important Safety Information: galleri.com/safety-information.
