Women’s Health
At Natchitoches Regional Medical Center, we offer a continuum of care for women that includes Breast Care Services, Obstetrics, and Gynecology.
New Breast Center Offering 3D Mammography
In January, 2020, NRMC opened its new state-of-the-art Breast Center. The Breast Center technology includes Hologics Genius 3D mammography. Radiologists use computers and specially designed digital detectors to view highly detailed breast tissue images. For women with dense breasts, 3D mammograms allow doctors to evaluate breast tissue layer by layer.
3D Mammography is also used to evaluate other conditions including non-malignant breast disorders including benign cysts, tumors, breast pain and other conditions.
The new Center also offers Hologics Smart Curve technology which is clinically proven to make the mammography experience more comfortable. Another feature is the Mammopad Breast cushion for a softer imaging experience. For women who used to feel discomfort during compressions, both of these new features improve the screening exam experience.
The beautiful mammography suites have a spa-like feel with private dressing rooms, a relaxing seating area, and large mammography screening rooms. Conveniently located on the first floor of the hospital, patients can quickly register in the Radiology Department and then go across the hall to the Breast Center for their mammograms.
Our experienced mammography team includes radiologic technologists who are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and radiologists on-site at the hospital. Importantly, NRMC’s Imaging Department has held the distinction of being accredited by the American College of Radiology since 2004.
The 3D computerized images are stored on NRMC’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACs) where doctors can compare images from year-to-year looking for any changes or differences.
NRMC wants to make the mammography experience as timely, efficient and as comfortable as possible. The hospital has also focused on streamlining processes to ensure easy scheduling. Patients no longer need a doctor’s order or referral. It just takes one quick phone call to set up an appointment — just call 318.214.4265.
Remember! Early Detection Saves Lives!
Obstetrics
Natchitoches Regional Medical Center’s Obstetrics Department delivers more than 500 babies each year and celebrates with joy upon each new arrival.
Baby Friendly Initiative
NRMC is working toward being designated as a Baby Friendly hospital. This is an initiative of the World Health Organization and UNICEF to help babies get the best start they can by encouraging care practices for the moms and babies such as breastfeeding. The goal is to help moms understand the benefits to her baby when she breastfeeds while respecting the mom’s choice to make an informed decision.
OB Unit
Our Labor and Delivery Unit is designed with mom’s comfort and privacy in mind and offers comprehensive care for our obstetrical patients.
There are four Labor, Delivery and Recovery (LDR) rooms, a surgery suite for Cesarean procedures, exam rooms, two post anesthesia rooms, three triage rooms, private rooms in the post-partum unit, and a state-of-the-art nursery.
The experienced nursing team includes registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and many others who work closely with the Obstetrics (OB) doctors to ensure the unique medical needs of each patient are met.
An important focus is the management of pain during the birthing experience. The staff is trained to assist the laboring mom with an individualized plan for pain control and comfort. A variety of techniques are used such as rocking, walking, aromatherapy, music and sound therapy, muscle relaxation, massages, heat/cold pack therapy and many more.
Additional services offered through the Labor and Delivery Unit include:
- Antepartum testing
- Pre-term labor management
- Pregnancy induced hypertensive
- Cervical incompetence management
Come for a Tour: Moms are welcome to tour the Obstetrics Unit and meet our nursing team. Please call (318) 214-4335 to schedule a visit.

NRMC OB/GYN Clinic also provides vacuum-assisted breast biopsy and breast needle localization for the diagnosis of breast cancer. The surgery department provides care for many cancer patients each year who need mastectomies or lumpectomies, lymph nodes removed and other surgeries.
All women age 40 and older or those with a family history of breast cancer are encouraged to get a screening mammogram at age 40 and then annually thereafter. Remember: Early detection saves lives.
