Surgical Services
Surgery Team
The Surgery Department team includes experienced registered nurses and surgery techs who work alongside the surgeons and nurse anesthetists. The department along with the Recovery Room and Same Day Surgery unit focus on patient safety and consistently achieve high quality scores and patient satisfaction scores.
OR and Endoscopy Suites
The Surgery Department has four operating rooms and two endoscopy suites, which are equipped with state-of-the art technology. From computerized medical records and charting to high definition laparoscopic technology and a C-Arm for imaging during fluoroscopy, the OR is well equipped to serve the surgical needs of the community.
Many surgeries can be safely done on an outpatient basis, and the hospital’s Same Day Surgery department assists patients and families before and after their procedures. The unit offers a comfortable setting with a low nurse-to-patient ratio.
Natchitoches Regional Medical Center offers a diverse range of surgical services for both inpatients and outpatients.
Robotic Surgery
NRMC’s robotic surgery system — the daVinci Si Surgical System — helps ensure the community has access to the latest advancements in minimally invasive surgery without having to leave the community for care.
During robotic surgery, the surgeon is seated at a console where he or she can see the surgery site in real time. With the aid of 3D visualization and special tools on the robotic arms, the surgeon is able to do the surgery through just a few small incisions. This provides many advantages over traditional laparoscopic surgery techniques by providing surgeons with superior vision, enhanced dexterity, and greater precision.
With this innovative system, surgeons can perform minimally invasive surgeries such as hysterectomies, cholecystectomies (gallbladder removal), colorectal surgery, prostatectomies and hernia repairs. The robotic arms allow surgeons to have good visualization of tissue and anatomy during the surgical procedure.
The benefits for our patients include: smaller incisions, less pain and scarring, a reduced risk of infection, shorter hospital stays, quicker recoveries, and good outcomes compared to traditional surgery. In many cases patients are back to normal daily living in a matter of days.
Robotic Surgery Post-Operative Care:
After the procedure, patients are taken to the recovery room depending on the procedure or back to a suite in Same Day Surgery.
• Patients are monitored one-to-one by a skilled Registered Nurse.
• Visitors are not allowed at this time.
• Once awake, outpatients will then be moved to Same Day Surgery while inpatients will be transferred directly to an inpatient unit once the recovery process is complete. This may be 1 to 2 hours.
Same Day Surgery
Many surgeries can be safely provided on an outpatient basis. Patients come to NRMC in the morning and go home the same day. The surgeries are provided in the NRMC operating suites by orthopedic surgeons, gynecologists, general surgeons, ENT surgeon, and other specialties.
The Same Day Surgery Unit is staffed by experienced registered nurses and other surgery Associates who consistently receive outstanding patient satisfaction scores and quality scores.
Upon arrival, patients should check in at the Same Day Surgery nursing desk located on the second floor. Patients will be escorted to their day surgery suite. A family member or support person may accompany the patient to the suite where patients will be prepped for surgery following the physician’s orders. This process takes approximately 30 to 90 minutes and includes:
• Interviewing the patient
• Signing consents
• Drawing lab work and starting an IV
• Anesthesia evaluation and interview
• Physician visit
Same Day Surgery Post-Operative Care
Outpatient surgeries use local anesthesia and are less complex than surgeries requiring inpatient admission. After surgery and recovery, patients return to the Same Day Surgery Suite. A family member may visit the patient. Then, after consultation between the physician and nursing staff, patients are discharged provided their pain is adequately managed and vital signs are within baseline. A responsible adult should be present other than the patient to receive discharge instructions and post-op education, drive the patient home and remain with the patient for the rest of the day.
