Position Summary

The Laboratory Supervisor provides professional clinical laboratory science services under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services. These duties and services include performance of clinical laboratory examinations, proficiency testing, quality control, professional consultation within the scope of her license, instrument maintenance and validation, testing validation, testing management, and other functions toward the attainment of these goals. The Laboratory Supervisor oversees the work of all laboratory employees except the Director of Laboratory Services in association with the 

Director of Laboratory Services i.e. Competency Assessment, Proficiency Testing and Job Performance. Duties are subject to change at any time as assigned by the Director of Laboratory Services.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Overseeing Microbiology 
  • Manages the Microbiology Department to assure that all quality controls are performed as required and all records are maintained as necessary to ensure accurate patient and proficiency results.
  • Must also meet all Joint Commission requirements.
  1. Overseeing Blood Bank
  • Manages the Blood Bank department to assure that all quality controls are run and documented as required.
  • Ensures that all temperature charts are changed and filed as required.  
  • Review of all patient transfusion and/or reaction documentation.
  1. Overseeing Chemistry
  • Manages the Chemistry Department to assure that all quality controls are performed as required and all records are maintained as necessary to ensure accurate patient and proficiency results. 
  • Must also meet all Joint Commission requirements.
  1. Overseeing Hematology
  • Manages the Hematology Department to assure that all quality controls are performed as required and all records are maintained as necessary to ensure accurate patient and proficiency results. 
  • Must also meet all Joint Commission requirements.
  1. Processing, Testing Reporting Results
  • This work is assigned only as needed when other technical employees are unavailable for the needed work.
  1. Supervising, Clerical, Assisting Director of Laboratory Services
  • Preparation of Weekly Schedule and Timesheet /Payroll Software
  1. Management of Quality Assurance Program Approved by the Pathologist
  • Monthly assessment of Quality Goals, Reporting to Quality Council, and implementation of process improvement plans.

Competencies

  1. In depth knowledge of laboratory procedures gained from years of experience working in multiple departments.
  2. Ability to use problems solving skills handling difficult situations with little or no supervision.
  3. Ability to evaluate, trouble shoot, research and solve problems. 
  4. Ability to be flexible in thinking and actions while maintaining a high degree of accuracy.
  5. All abilities commensurate with having a degree in a biological or chemistry field while incorporating all the knowledge gained during attendance at an approved School of Medical Technology or equivalent and several years of work experience.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervises all Laboratory associates except the Director.

Required Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor of Science degree in Medical technology, Biology, Chemistry or related science required.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. State licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist—Generalist required. ASCP certification preferred.

  4. Requires sitting up to 1/3 of the time.
  5. Requires lifting of 10 to 50 pounds up to 1/3 of the time.
  6. Requires the use of hands/fingers to lift, carry, push, and pull of objects up to 1/3 of the time.
  7. Requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling up to 1/3 of the time.
  8. Requires bending at least 1/10 of the time.
  9. Requires reaching, handling, fingering, and feeling of objects at least 2/3 or more of the time.
  10. Requires taste or smell up to 1/3 of the time.
  11. Requires good vision for near and distance with the ability to focus.
  12. Requires the ability to hear and identify clinical alarms on equipment.
  13. Requires the ability to hear on the client call system as well as staff in order to be an effective communication link.
  14. Environment: Work is performed primarily inside a central air medical facility.
  15. Hazards: Possibility of incidental exposure or injury from vapors, fumes, moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, chemical and biological hazards, patient contact with waste handling and needles/syringes; frequent use of protective equipment such as face shield, gloves, and fluid-resistant coats is necessary.
