Position Summary

The Critical Care Technician provides assistance in the critical care setting by performing such tasks as clerical duties, ordering supplies, delivering specimens, and answering patient call lights. The person in this position will also perform other duties as assigned and as appropriate within the scope of his or her training and abilities.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates patient advocacy as it relates to patient rights, confidentiality, and privacy.

2. Interacts appropriately with the age and developmental levels of patients and families served within the ICU.

3. Assumes accountability for work performed.

4. Follows all hospital and unit standards.

5. Participates in performance improvement activities.

6. Participates with orientation of new associates using orientation checklist.

7. Establishes annual self-development plan.

8. Attends annual mandatory classes/in-services.

9. Maintains department attendance standards.

10. Attends 50% of staff meetings.

11. Maintains knowledge and skills of:

a. Tasks/functions related practice

b. Applicable standards of care and standards of practice

c. Safety and infection control standards

d. Age appropriate care

12. Demonstrates appropriate behavior in crisis situations.

13. Adheres to department professional conduct standards.

14. Accepts responsibility for meeting attendance guidelines of NRMC policy.

15. Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.

16. Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized punch time system correctly.

17. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

18. Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.

19. Orders departmental clerical supplies through unit manager and puts the supplies away.

20. Maintains an accurate and orderly filing system and a neat working area.

21. Uses the patient information system to locate patients’ rooms, to order records, x-rays, lab, etc.

22. Develops nonstock purchase requisitions as needed.

23. Takes specimens to Pathology and Laboratory as requested.

24. Answers, screens, and directs incoming multi-line telephone calls.

25. Answers patient call lights immediately.

26. Notifies the nurse caring for the patient and attaches report to front of chart.

27. Obtains charts, x-ray supplies, equipment, medicines, blood products, etc., as individual situations require.

28. Maintains unit log book.

29. Maintains cleanliness and order of the patient care station.

30. Maintains a courteous manner on the telephone, in patient/family interactions, and in relating to other health care providers.

31. Provides additional clerical support to staff as directed.

Competencies

1. Ability to exercise phone etiquette.

2. Knowledge of basic computer programs.

3. Knowledge of medical terminology.

4. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate effectively in English.

5. Ability to use appropriate discretion in handling confidential material and information.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements:

Required Education and Experience

1. High School graduate or equivalent.

2. Completion of basic arrhythmia course within first 6 months of employment, followed by additional basic arrhythmia training 6 months after initial course, & annually thereafter. 

Preferred Education and Experience

1. Six months previous experience preferred.

2. Non-smoker preferred; must be willing to work in a smoke-free environment.
